I've been running a slew of home computers (includes those run by kids and wife) for a long time. Avast seems better than AVG, but I don't like the annual (free) registration requirement, and I hate that it chatters, right out loud, when it does updates. I do not recommend MSE because I have had to remove more malware from computers running MSE than any one real-time (up to date) AV.
