When I restored 8.1 I was told I needed to install yet another required update (Grrr). However I got a blue screen with an error message that said: "A PROBLEM HAS BEEN DETECTED AND WINDOWS HAS BEEN SUT DOWN TO PREVENT DAMAGE TO YOUR COMPUTER. He has a habit of getting impatient and physically shutting down his computer if he thinks it is taking very long to shut down normally. Symptoms: The laptop starts as usual but when Windows starts to load it goes to black screen with either "UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME", "hal.dll is missing or corrupted" or "windows\system32\config\system" (or similar) is missing his comment is here
Your article made me realize that my problem, where startup programs wouldn't start when I would log into Windows after a shut-down, was because of "hybrid shutdown". MS support were clueless. I should mention the stop error code is slightly different now from what it was originally. SO very glad that it worked.

what is the recovery console and bootcfg/rebuild command? Starting in safe mode produces the same results (last know good configuration does no good either). Anyway, I still have this Restart problem.
